Your Unconventional Physiotherapist
JoAnne Gratton MScPT, BKin completed her Masters in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta and prior to that an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Since graduating she has taken many continuing education course such as Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), Neurokinetic Technique (NKT), SHIFT Concussion Management, Acutonics, and Manual Therapy Techniques.
Growing up, she had an active involvement in recreational sports such as swimming, volleyball, wakeboarding, and running, which led to several injuries and different experiences with physical therapy. It was through these experiences that she developed a passion towards movement, the human body and lifestyle improvement. As an avid hiker JoAnne dreamed of hiking the John Muir Trail, a 220-mile trek through the high Sierra in California. This would not have been possible if she did not take her own injury recovery seriously and in 2019 she completed her dream hike.
It is her belief that no one should ever have to fully stop participating in sport or activity due to an injury or condition and that with the commitment from her self and the client they can work in tandem to foster a return to sport, activity or occupation to their fullest potential. With a systematic approach to identifying the contributing factors she works to identify the root cause of the pain/injury. She employs a variety of treatments in her practice: joint mobilization, scar manipulation, Acutonics, trigger point release, deep tissue massage, muscle energy techniques, and exercise prescription. Treatment planning is individualised to the client’s needs and desires to effectively target their recovery goals. JoAnne has a diversified experience in musculoskeletal conditions including post-surgical recovery, frozen shoulder, whiplash, MVA, strains and sprains, ACL rehabilitation, and has a special interest in concussion rehabilitation and functional movement therapy.
She can be found working out of Calgary Muscle and Soft Tissue Clinic or at NW Chiropractic and Massage. —
